Street Children Program
St. Mary's Boys Secondary School initiated the program for Street Children in the town of Nyeri in July 1999. Many of these children come from existing homes but have become "drop-outs". For many their parents cannot afford to send them to school or they do not have the ability to cope with their children. For some, the family situation is not supportive for a child to go to school on a regular basis. Often costs and embarrassment prevent a child from attending school.
St. Mary's Feeds, Boards & Pays basic Primary School needs (Mattress & Bed sheets, Uniform, Shoes, etc) for over 130 of the very poor children of Nyeri town & its environs. These young children are "rescued" from the streets and live "side-by-side" with older Secondary School students who provide an "older brother"influence within a disciplined, caring community.
Schooling: Street Children who are not ready to enter regular school are academically and socially prepared at St. Mary's in small groups before being placed in Primary school.
