HISTORY.

The school was founded in 1960 by Catholic Diocese of Nyeri.  The American Lay Volunteers (1960-65) were its 1st teachers/Heads, followed by the Consolata Fathers (1965-1989). De La Salle Christian Brothers took over Administration in 1990 at request of the Nyeri Diocese.

THE SCHOOL

St Mary's School has an enrollment of 440 students. Our class size of 55 is greater than the 45 students in the normal public school without compromising the Quality of Education offered.. More than 1,000 apply each year for 100 available seats

"HARAMBEE(Let us Work together)” SCHOOL MAINTENANCE:

St Mary’s students are responsible for the daily cleaning & maintenance of the school compound and farm (including livestock).  Thus, no auxiliary staff is employed for this purpose since students are arranged in a systematic work schedule of 40 minutes daily that is run by Student Managers.

Everything goes back into the school in a true “Harambee” or Self-Sufficiency spirit.  In addition, students learn good managerial and accountability habits that are useful not only in their own homes but for their future job survival.

Child Rescue Program.

In 1998, a Program was initiated to care for the numerous “Street Children” in the town of Nyeri. Many of these were Orphans, Runaways or abandoned by parents of dysfunctional families.  The initial number of 30 grew to nearly 200 in short order and these were placed in local public primary schools.

Polytechnic School.

Started in 2007 for those students not “academically-inclined”, a full-fledged Vocational training school is also operated on campus.  Students learn Carpentry, Welding, Electricity & Auto Mechanics in addition to English & Math in a 2-3 year program culminating in sitting for the Ministry Certification in at least two of these areas.

ST.MARY’S is more than a School - it is a Community. For many, it is their home-away-from-home.  Students have a sense of “ownership” of the school since they are responsible for the maintenance and its continued ability to assist them in achieving a better quality of life for themselves and their families through education.  The emphasis on Community-building, Corporate ownership, and an increased sensitivity to those less fortunate(Street Children Program) engenders in the young man a maturity and sense of the “real world” that hopefully prepares him to take a more vibrant and responsible role in future civic duties.

In the tradition of St.John Baptist de LaSalle, founder of the Congregation of the Christian Brothers in 1681, the principal focus of the school is the Student and his religious, social, academic & character development. All aspects of the school(Administration, Teachers, Curriculum, Schedules, etc) are directed and accountable to that focus and it is for that very reason that the school exists. By vocation, the Brothers choose to operate schools principally for the poor and marginalized of an area, offering an education that is “practicable” for those entrusted to their care. Since the Brothers are but a small fraction of the school’s teachers, they seek to give a sense of “Shared Mission” and corporate ownership of the school to all Staff and Students
