INTRODUCTION:

Saint Mary's is a Nyeri Catholic Diocesan Private Boys Boarding/Day Secondary School. The Manager of the school is the Archbishop of Nyeri. The school was founded in 1962 and is conducted by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, a teaching Order staffing over 1,000 schools world-wide(In Kenya, the Brothers conduct 3 other Secondary Schools, a post-Secondary Commercial School and a Secondary Teacher Training College). The school teaches the regular subjects for the 8-4-4 education system, with an emphasis on Agriculture & Business Education. In addition to a full academic curriculum, St.Mary = s also strives to provide for the spiritual and physical welfare of the students, offering special instructions for the reception of the Sacraments for Catholic students. In addition, there are school Masses on Wed­nesdays and Sundays. Protestant students may go out to the Nyeri town churches on Sundays after the school Mass Service.

A full Sports programme (Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, TableTennis & Badminton) and Cultural activities(Choir/Journalism/Debate/ Drama/Scouts/YCS/etc) take place after the teaching periods. Many of the sports teams reach the District, Provincial or National playoffs. Academically, last year, St.Mary = s ranked 5th of all Nyeri District schools, and was #52 in the National KCSE Ranking. Over 50% of its 104 candi- dates had a B plain or better & hence were called to the National University.

The school has a well-stocked Library which the students are encouraged to use. The labs are well equipped for the Sciences and Computer Science is taught to all students in all the Forms as part of the regular curriculum using a fully-networked complex equipped with 28 state-of-the-art computers. Additional Computers are also available in the Library for after-school use. Weekend activities include special Revision classes; supervised Study preps; Games; Saturday/Sunday night video movie; etc.

The Non-teaching staff is kept to a minimum in order to maximize the use of School Fees for primarily academic purposes and each student is therefore expected to participate in a short(40') daily community work program to keep the school clean, to do routine maintenance and to grow some of the food he eats. The students operate a Zero Grazing unit which supplies all the milk needed in the school, a Pig Unit, a Posho mill and School Farm. Students who feel they cannot participate in this program should NOT come to St. Mary's. Students who require special diets will have to join the Day section.

FAMILY BURSARY: The Older Brother of an incoming Form 1 student pays only
1st Term Fees as long as both Brothers are in St.Mary = s.

EVERYTHING is included in the Fees above. There are NO OTHER Fees.
Day Students receive Lunch daily and All Students are covered by Accident Insurance for travel to and from St.Mary = s and at all times during school. All required TEXTBOOKS are LOANED to the student on a shared basis (1 for 2 students in most subjects) but individual copies are given for some subjects(Math, English, etc).The KSCE National Exam Installment is charged each year to spread out the cost of the Exam over a 4 year period. Thus, Form 4 parents pay the same Fees as Form 2 with no additional Exam Fees. In addition, St.Mary = s tries to assist Form 1 parents by purchasing School Uniforms at wholesale prices and selling them at cost to them. The same is true for personal books (Dictionary/Bible/ Math Tables - XXX above). Form 2, 3 & 4 Fees are the same as above(except for Uniform Costs - Parents purchase afterwards at their local shops).

BOARDING STUDENTS must bring their own Mattress, Bedsheets and Blankets. It is to be well understood that those accepted for the BOARDING section will be carefully monitored in their behaviour and discipline during the 4 years. Since the BOARDING option is a privilege, certain violations of the rules governing it are One-Time offenses (Bullying/Stealing) & these would mean automatic loss of this privilege.

ADMISSION CRITERIA: Students are accepted to St.Mary = s based on performance and irrespective of Religion(but a minimum of 60% Catholic is tried to be maintained). APPLICANTS WITH LESS THAN 360MARKS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED but the Cut-off Mark is normally higher.

Successful Applications will be posted on the Bulletin Board at St.Mary = s on Jan.17 (Jan. 5 for Form 2 transfers) and the Joining Instructions Form must be picked up from St.Mary = s immediately afterwards. FAILURE to pick this Form or Telephone acceptance by Sat, Jan.21 will NULLIFY the student = s Acceptance & his place will be given to another. 2nd SELECTION will be on Mon. Jan. 23
